How to Care for Your Sarees: A Complete Saree Care Guide

A beautiful saree deserves beautiful care.

Whether it is a soft cotton saree, a traditional handloom, a silk-cotton weave or an elegant festive saree, proper care helps preserve its colour, texture, softness and beauty for years to come.

At Balan Vastra, we believe that every saree carries a story. With the right care, that story can continue for generations.

1. Always Check the Fabric First

Different sarees require different care.

Before washing or storing your saree, identify the fabric and check the care instructions provided with the saree.

Cotton, handloom, silk, silk-cotton and delicate fabrics may each require different methods of cleaning and storage.

2. Wash With Care

For delicate and handloom sarees, gentle hand washing is generally preferable to harsh washing methods.

  • Use mild detergent when washing is appropriate.

  • Avoid strong chemicals and bleach.

  • Do not scrub the fabric harshly.

  • Avoid soaking delicate sarees for long periods.

  • Wash darker and lighter colours separately when possible.

For delicate silk or richly embellished sarees, professional dry cleaning may be the safer option.

3. Avoid Direct Sunlight

After washing, avoid leaving your saree under strong, direct sunlight for long periods.

Excessive sunlight can gradually affect the colour of the fabric.

Instead, dry it gently in a well-ventilated, shaded area.

4. Iron at the Right Temperature

Always choose the ironing temperature according to the fabric.

For delicate sarees, use a lower temperature and place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree for additional protection.

Avoid pressing the same area repeatedly.

5. Store Sarees Properly

Good storage can make a big difference.

Before storing your saree, make sure it is completely dry. Fold it neatly and place it in a clean, dry cupboard away from moisture.

For delicate sarees, avoid keeping heavy clothing or objects directly on top of them.

It is also a good idea to refold stored sarees occasionally to prevent permanent fold marks.

6. Give Your Sarees Some Air

Sarees should not remain tightly packed for very long periods.

Occasionally take them out, gently unfold them and allow them to breathe before folding and storing them again.

This is especially helpful for sarees that are worn less frequently.

7. Take Extra Care With Embellished Sarees

Sarees with zari, embroidery, sequins or other embellishments need extra care.

Fold them carefully and avoid placing them where the embellishments may catch on other fabrics.

When storing delicate embellished sarees, placing a soft, clean cloth between folds can provide additional protection.

8. Keep Sarees Away From Moisture

Moisture can damage fabrics and may lead to unpleasant odours or other issues over time.

Always store sarees in a dry, clean environment and make sure they are completely dry before putting them away.

9. Handle Your Saree With Clean Hands

Before folding or handling your saree, make sure your hands are clean and dry.

This simple habit can help reduce the transfer of oils, moisture and dirt onto the fabric.

10. Love Your Sarees, Wear Your Sarees

Sarees are meant to be enjoyed.

Wear them, celebrate in them, create memories in them and care for them with love.

From everyday cottons to traditional handlooms and festive weaves, every saree deserves a little attention to keep its beauty alive.
